“CLOUD | HOLE | PLANET” by Michele De Matthaies for Folded Realities

Project: “CLOUD | HOLE | PLANET”

Artist: Michele De Matthaies

The works transform paper into space and matter: in white, the fold opens like a breath; in black, it gives way, revealing absence and vulnerability; in red, it condenses into energy and generative force. A triptych that tells of birth, metamorphosis, and memory.

Work 1: “CLOUDS”
Opening – In white, the fold unfurls.
Paper clouds occupy almost the entire space, yet leave a gap: an opening, a breath.
The trace is not a wound but a memory of passage, as though the sky had been touched and then released.

Work 2: “HOLE”
Collapse– In black, the fold neither opens nor resists: it yields.
The black hole of paper is a visual paradox: what should be infinite and immaterial becomes thin, marked and vulnerable matter. Here the trace is absence, silent attraction, the end of the gesture.

Work 3: “PLANET”
Compression– Red concentrates energy.
The folds tighten and accumulate, forming a dense and unstable celestial body. Paper, fragile by nature, becomes a metaphor for the force it generates, the heat that precedes explosion or birth.
