Description

The items we present here are Made in Ethiopia, made of cotton grown by small farmer cooperatives using traditional techniques and hand-printed, all produced in WFTO-certified factories.

The World Fair Trade Organization (WFTO) is a global association of visionary small and medium-sized enterprised, which believe in a new possible economy.
Entrepreneurs and promoters of change, at the forefront of advocacy for a fair and sustainable world, operate in different sectors: from food to fashion, from household items to tourism, from toys to digital services.

In many parts of Ethiopia, cotton is grown using traditional methods by cooperatives of small farmers who are allocated 2 to 3 hectares. Plowing is done with wooden plows pulled by Zebu, sowing by hand, weeding by hand (5 times during the life of the cotton plant!) and harvesting by hand. Animal fertilizers and some containers of molasses scattered in the field are sometimes used as pesticides. The seeds are not GMOs of industrial origin but local seeds. For much of the cotton grown in Ethiopia, no irrigation is used but only rainwater.

The print is made by hand. The technology used in Ethiopia is the most “labour intensive” in the sector and, unlike the new digital techniques of direct inkjet on fabric, gives the product a unique and artisanal appearance, which stands out from mass products.
