The alcohol comes from Mauritius, where just over 2,000 farmers grow Fairtrade sugar cane.
This is a fundamental product for the island’s economy, which exports 90% of its production. Furthermore, cultivation counteracts soil degradation at risk of abandonment and reduces dependence on imported oil, thanks to the production of electricity from bagasse (the remains of the cane after pressing).
Fairtrade has been working in Mauritius for some time and the impact has been notable: yields have more than doubled and the use of pesticides has decreased. Furthermore, with the remains of the cane, electricity and biofertilizers have begun to be produced, transforming waste into a resource, reducing production costs and thus guaranteeing greater profits for farmers.
