This makes space for microbes that send out chemical signals, a part of the quorum sensing process, that attracts other microbes.
During this process, the microbes break down the chemical bonds of polymer chains at an accelerated rate.
In the end most of the carbon is consumed, leaving behind methane which is captured for clean energy.
