About us
SMUSH Materials is an Italian start-up developing bio-based protective packaging solutions for industrial products, made from agricultural by-products and mushroom mycelium. The materials are designed to replace conventional expanded plastic foams such as EPS, EPP, and EPE in industrial and logistics packaging applications, offering a sustainable and high-performance alternative for protecting fragile, heavy, or high-value components.
Through a proprietary growth and fermentation process, agricultural waste is transformed into lightweight yet structurally resistant packaging components with natural shock-absorbing properties, dimensional stability, and mechanical strength. SMUSH materials are 100% compostable and certified TÜV Austria OK Industrial Compost, significantly reducing environmental impact compared to conventional expanded plastic foams.
SMUSH’s approach combines biomaterial development, product design, and manufacturing process engineering to make bio-fabricated materials compatible with large-scale industrial production requirements. The technology is designed to integrate with established manufacturing processes such as fermentation, molding, and drying, enabling industrially scalable, cost-competitive solutions aligned with circular economy principles.
