About us
Gmund Paper – No Compromise
Sustainability and innovation are not a trend for Gmund Paper, but both a first principle and a
longstanding tradition. Our company relies on ecological methods, renewable raw materials and state-of-the-art technologies to manufacture excellent papers and paper products that are in demand around the globe. We create custom-tailored solutions for sustainable brand resentations at our development and production site in the town of Gmund at Lake Tegernsee. In addition to an attractive look and feel, customers also want to actively improve their eco-balance. Gmund Paper’s uncompromising standards of quality and service contribute to the success of our customers all over the world. This is because Gmund papers can be used to convey very differentiated messages. Those who use it gain added value and can place their products more successfully on the market.
Ecological production
Gmund Paper has taken sustainable production seriously for generations. By constantly augmenting our machinery with energy-efficient high-tech components, we keep all our machines up to date and upgraded for the future. This conserves resources and assures consistent quality. New buildings are constructed according to ecological principles and adapted to our location beside the Mangfall River so that they harmonize with the surrounding landscape. Wherever possible, we rely on local suppliers, thus shortening transport distances.
100% hydropower
Since 2023, 100% of our purchased electricity has come from sustainable hydropower plants. The
green electricity certificate that we were awarded proves that green electricity is sourced exclusively from renewable energy plants which meet the statutory environmental standards.
Gmund Environmental Charter
With our Environmental Charter, Gmund became the first paper mill to establish a trendsetting
environmental standard more than a decade ago and to take a stand on the four pillars of
environmental protection in the paper industry:
Water
Utilization of new technologies has enabled us achieve a 70% reduction in our consumption of fresh water in production in recent decades. Our state-of-the-art ozone treatment plant purifies the production water, which can be reused up to seven times before it is sent to the municipal wastewater treatment plant. In 2005, Gmund was awarded the Bavarian State Medal for Services to the Environment and Health for this ozone treatment plant.
Raw materials
Only environmentally friendly and guaranteed sustainable raw materials are used in the production of our papers. It goes without saying that Gmund Paper is FSC® certified (FSC-C006462). Furthermore, with our “Greenfibra Labs” development laboratory, we continue to research alternative plant fibers for paper production, for example, hemp, cotton or straw.
Waste & recycling
Every piece of waste is meticulously separated and recycled, wherever possible. Production waste
ends up in pre-consumer recycling –consistently and color-sorted. Thanks to a strict internal waste minimization program, we have reduced the overall volume of our waste by 82% during the past ten years.
Energy
We generate up to 75% of our electrical energy from hydropower, solar energy, and combined heat and power. In 2019, we invested in new solar panels with greater energy output, as well as a new and more efficient boiler house. We continually make minor and major changes to processes to further reduce our energy consumption.

Gmund Bio Cycle – Contributing to a Better World
Conservation of natural resources and environmental responsibility were top priorities when the paper experts at Lake Tegernsee developed these new papers. The specialists wanted to use rapidly growing fibers to replace half of the wood that comprises the raw material for these papers. After countless tests of machines and materials, the experts developed new papers that embody timeless beauty and an outstanding ecological balance. Users of Gmund Bio Cycle paper get genuine added value in design, haptics, story and credibility. This collection is perfect for companies that want to express their green philosophy through the papers they choose for their packaging, brochures or print communication. When it comes to sustainability, the specialists at Gmund offer the very highest standard. Customers not only like the look and feel of these papers, they also appreciate the good feeling they get from knowing that their choice of paper has taken ecological balance into consideration. The innovative papers in the Bio Cycle collection contain up to 50% alternative ingredients, augmented with fresh-fiber cellulose that’s always FSC® certified at Gmund. The collection also includes an ecological classic made from 100% recycled paper. An Overview of Gmund Bio Cycle: - Five papers: Chlorophyll – Blattgrün Wheat – Stroh Cannabis – Hanf Rag – Baumwolle Cycle – Kreislauf - Available in weights of 100, 120, 300 und 600 g/m² depending on the paper variety - For all commonly used printing techniques - Suitable for a wide range of applications

Gmund Hanf - An ecological sensation
Only Gmund Paper can do it: 100% European hemp becomes a sensationally ecological and creative paper After having developed a hemp paper containing up to 50% cannabis pulp from European cultivation (supplemented by virgin fiber pulp) for its Bio Cycle collection, Gmund Paper has now succeeded in producing a paper made from 100% cannabis pulp. Hemp’s long fibers, which are a challenge for paper production, make this innovative paper both strong in structure and wonderfully soft to the touch. The paper’s surface is wild and cloudy – pure nature. The collection also includes Gmund Hanf 50%, which contains recycled paper fibers, and Gmund Hanf 10%, which is made from pure pulp. Gmund Hanf is produced entirely without dyes. Advantages of hemp for paper production: - A field of hemp yields four to five times as much paper as a forest of the same size - Hemp grows four meters per year - Hemp can be harvested three times per year; by comparison, a tree needs about seven years to grow - Hemp does not deplete the soil, so it can be replanted immediately after harvesting - Hemp fibers are long and very stable; compared to wood pulp, hemp pulp has four to five times longer fibers, as well as higher tensile, tear and wet strengths - Hemp fibers are naturally very light in color and accordingly require much less bleaching - Hemp improves the future recycling process and can be repeatedly recycled Gmund Hemp at a glance: - Three varieties: Gmund Hanf 100%, Gmund Hanf 50% and Gmund Hanf 10% - Available in grammages of 120 g/m² and 320 g/m² - Suitable for all common printing techniques

Gmund Used - An ecological paper with history
Gmund Used – the eco-friendly paper with its own history It has always been of utmost priority for Gmund to manufacture their papers environmental-friendly. For example, thanks to an ozone purification facility, Gmund Paper reduced its water consumption in paper production by 70% during the past several decades. And Gmund uses water power, solar energy and heat-and-power coupling to generate up to 75% of the energy it needs. The Gmund Used collection reaffirms and continues this commitment to sustainability. Gmund Used is made out of 100% recovered paper. This paper combines two materials: 80% high-quality DIP which is FSC® certified and 20% secondary packaging materials collected in Gmund, which are subsequently collected and separated according to the type of material. This closed-circuit transforms used paper from being waste to becoming a high-quality design paper by Gmund. Gmund Used stands for optimal quality with maximal fiber utilization and convinces in its bright and vibrant colors.
