The news comes as James Cropper bolsters its own sustainable credentials by reducing the amount of packing material used by the business<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Until now, the 5% of waste plastic that is removed from each cup was being used as a source for energy recovery in the production of recycled paper. Meanwhile, the high quality paper fibre from the cup is made Into new paper products and premium packaging.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The latest technological advance means the Cumbrian papermaker has closed the loop on its CupCycling technology.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rob Tilsley, Fibre Operations Group Leader from James Cropper says:<\/strong> \u201cRecognising value in the high quality fibre used to create paper cups, we were inspired to convert this enormous waste stream into a value stream instead, and now we\u2019ve taken it even further.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWorking with our local waste management partner, Cumbria Waste, we have been relentlessly exploring sustainable opportunities where the cup plastic can be recycled or reused locally. Processing around 155 tonnes of plastic every day, the clean plastic pellets eventually end up in a range of products such as bags and wraps to plastic gates, animal pens and grain stores.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Plastic waste has been a growing environmental concern. About 60 million tonnes of plastics are produced in Europe every year <a href=\"https:\/\/eur02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.reuters.com%2Farticle%2Fus-climate-change-plastics%2Feuropean-countries-recycle-less-than-a-third-of-plastic-waste-research-firm-idUSKBN1YF24W&amp;data=05%7C01%7Cvalentina.ferlenga%40easyfairs.com%7Ccb3c9a27242b4fdb945e08db9ca0eda2%7Cad58c17f1c944fb0bb6a606501347f25%7C1%7C0%7C638275988303034557%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000%7C%7C%7C&amp;sdata=Cn9%2BznBrCmyaFNpqPGHVagCtKvAfwIGqMLHtIgkHrq0%3D&amp;reserved=0\">while only 30% of it is recycled<\/a>. Of all the plastic waste ever generated, <a href=\"https:\/\/eur02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fadvances.sciencemag.org%2Fcontent%2F3%2F7%2Fe1700782.full&amp;data=05%7C01%7Cvalentina.ferlenga%40easyfairs.com%7Ccb3c9a27242b4fdb945e08db9ca0eda2%7Cad58c17f1c944fb0bb6a606501347f25%7C1%7C0%7C638275988303034557%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000%7C%7C%7C&amp;sdata=kTTKiVz4Sfu4omi0YflEcLVfpu8k9vdq5dmBzb6R9%2Bs%3D&amp;reserved=0\">79% has ended up in landfill<\/a> or as litter in the natural environment.\u00a0But, as Europe transitions to a more circular economy \u2013 where materials are reused at the end of their life rather than thrown away \u2013 improvements in plastic recycling will play an important part and this is a fantastic example of that.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The latest CupCycling development comes as the paper mill bolsters its already impressive sustainable capabilities with another development.\u00a0 James Cropper has commissioned new commercial packaging, that protects paper from moisture ingress during transport, with 30% recycled content.
