Objects do not grow old, said Mario Trimarchi \u2013 architect, designer and professor \u2013 in his opening keynote: \u201cWe are the ones who become obsolete, not things.\u201d Starting from this shift in perspective, Trimarchi, Federica Cecchi and Luca Fois, joining via video, developed a shared reflection around a single idea: the meaning behind design matters more than function and only that meaning allows an object to stand the test of time.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6e78f6f elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"6e78f6f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h5><strong>Trimarchi: function is dead, meaning stays<\/strong><\/h5>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-79b1cbf elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"79b1cbf\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>For Trimarchi: \u201cFunction is dead. None of us buys an object because it works well; we take it for granted that objects work.\u201d What remains, as we look at the details of an object, is its ability to \u201cgenerate behaviours, thoughts and reflections\u201d: the designer\u2019s real task is to build relationships and create meaning. One example is a jug he deliberately designed to be complex to use, with the aim of slowing down the act of pouring water and bringing greater attention to a daily action. Social innovation is something else entirely: \u201cit is something new that establishes new behavioural patterns\u201d, an innovation \u201cnot only in terms of function or form, but specifically in human relationships\u201d. Fois also reminded the audience that designers never work alone but operate within a collective supply chain of expertise. This is where the designer\u2019s responsibility comes in: to see the person they are addressing not as a consumer, but as an individual. Only then can they create something that will retain its meaning even when its function no longer exists \u2013 the meaning of having built a relationship. For Cecchi, form itself is where meaning and ideas converge, creating a genuine connection and an emotional bridge with the audience.
